Teachers are first and foremost - learners!
What if before the world was formed, before time itself began, God was thinking about you—not vaguely, but specifically designing everything about you – and especially - how you would minister in His kingdom? That’s not motivational "mumbo-jumbo"; that’s Scriptural.
Romans 12:7 gives a simple but non-negotiable command: “If you are a teacher, teach well.” - Those brief - words tell us that teaching is not just a career, a hobby or a volunteer role; it’s a holy calling.
The Teacher’s Heart: Teaching isn’t just passing information from one brain to another. Or even just - "teaching for the test" - The gift of teaching is the Spirit-given capacity to explain the Word of God clearly and accurately so others can understand it and apply it – for their lives and then in turn for others.
God's Toolbox: You don’t get mad at the hammer because it can’t drill a hole – and you don’t expect a screwdriver to drive in a nail. Every tool has a purpose. Likewise, the body of Christ is made up of different gifts – designed to all work together to build the house. The teacher’s role is unique—but it’s just as essential as every other gift.
Five Signs You Might Have the Gift of Teaching:
The Teacher’s Mission: Creating More Teachers.
In 2 Timothy 2:2, Paul lays out the teacher’s ultimate multiplication mandate: “The things you have learned from me… commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.” The heart of a teacher isn’t just to inform, but to equip others who will be able to equip others - and they in turn will also be able to ... "equip others" - and so on and so forth! - It’s a relay race, not a solo sprint.
A friend of mine – a machinist once described how he could tear down - clean and re-assemble his machine in ten minutes flat. He was so good at it - when asked to train a new worker, he just demonstrated his routine. Four hours later, the new guy (who said -"gee that looks easy") was surrounded by a bunch of left over parts and severe 'agita' (Italian slang, for 'heartburn, acid indigestion, and a 'state of severe mental anxiety and aggravation') -ha!
The machinist had to start all over—this time explaining each step, laying out and organizing the pieces, sharing his tips and tricks. After teaching this new person - over and over again - observing and adjusting - thinking about how he had done it all these years - on "auto-pilot" - only then did my friend realize: he didn’t fully understand what he was doing until he had to teach it to someone else.
He told me he ended up getting better at it - as a result of having to teach another. That’s the teacher’s beautiful paradox—you learn best when you teach it to someone else.
Two Foundations of Effective Teaching
Stirring Up Your Gift
If you’re saved, you’re called. Your calling is holy, and was designed before time began. God did not save you just to attend church; He saved you to function in the church. If this description of teaching resonates with you, don’t bury that gift. Don’t wait until you “feel ready”—you never will. Start where you are. Ask: “Lord, show me how You’ve wired me. Clarify my motivational gift. Wherever I’m gifted, use me to build up Your body in love.” Then step out. Talk to leadership at your church and ask: "do you see this gifting in me?" "is there an area - where I can try this out?" - Lead a small group. Help in a class. Disciple one person. As you teach, you’ll find that God not only uses you—He will grow you.
“If you are a teacher, teach well.”

Five Signs You Might Have the Gift of Teaching:
- You love to learn. You’re a lifelong student. You don’t settle for surface-level answers; you dig, compare passages, and look for patterns and connections.
- You enjoy studying Scripture. Bible study feels like digging for Gold - not just raking leaves. Like a treasure hunt. A familiar verse suddenly opens up in a new way, and you light up inside.
- You care about accuracy and context. Who said it? Why? When? To whom? You instinctively ask these questions, because you know context imparts meaning and meaning protects us from error.
- You naturally like to explain things. You can’t help it—when you understand something, you want to help others understand it too. “Let me explain how this works” - is a phrase you may hear yourself saying.
- You love seeing people understand truth. Nothing gets you more excited than seeing the light go on in someone else’s eyes when they see something in Scripture that they've never seen before.

Two Foundations of Effective Teaching
- A deep commitment to the Word. Teachers love Scripture. They recognize that all Scripture is “profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16). They constantly ask: What is true? What is wrong? How do we make it right? How do we stay on track?
- Dependence on the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the ultimate teacher (John 14:26). Human teachers are like eyeglasses—they don’t write the words, they just help people see them. Without the Spirit, we can have the text but miss the truth.
